FG Closes Plateau Mining Site After 37 Die from Gas Leak

The Federal Government of Nigeria has shut down a mining site in the Zurak community of Wase Local Government Area following a tragic incident where 37 villagers reportedly lost their lives due to inhalation of poisonous gas during local mining activities. The incident occurred when young men were working in an underground pit that was poorly ventilated, leading to exposure to toxic fumes, suspected to be carbon monoxide.

Additionally, 25 other individuals were rushed to the hospital for treatment. Abdullahi Dan, who holds a mining license for the area, is implicated in the operations.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development expressed sorrow over the deaths and described the victims as citizens trying to survive through legitimate means. A high-level investigative team, led by Permanent Secretary Yusuf Yabo, has been dispatched to examine the underlying causes of the gas leak and to advise the government on necessary actions, including potential penalties for officials involved.

The investigation is ongoing.
