WBA Sanctions Usyk Title Defense Against Verhoeven in Egypt

The World Boxing Association (WBA) has approved a title defense for Oleksandr Usyk against kickboxer Rico Verhoeven, set to take place on May 23 in Egypt, specifically at the Pyramids of Giza. This matchup represents a rare crossover event between elite boxing and kickboxing in the heavyweight division.

The WBA confirmed that the fight will count as a defense of Usyk's heavyweight belt. However, Verhoeven will not be eligible to win the title due to his current unranked status with the governing body.

The WBA stated that a defeat of the Ukrainian champion could trigger a review of the belt's future. Oleksandr Usyk, who remains unbeaten with 24 professional fights, has previously defeated notable opponents such as Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Daniel Dubois.

Usyk expressed confidence in his choice of opponent, highlighting Verhoeven's experience as a former Glory heavyweight champion, with a professional boxing career dating back to 2014.
