OAU Addresses Cancellation of Peter Obi's Lecture Event

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) issued a statement regarding the cancellation of a scheduled lecture featuring former presidential candidate Peter Obi. The university's spokesman, Abiodun Olarewaju, clarified that the decision was based on logistical challenges and safety concerns rather than any intent to embarrass Obi.

The university noted that the event was organized by a student group without proper notification to the appropriate authorities, which hindered adequate preparation. The university was not informed of Obi's invitation status until the day before the event, making it difficult to coordinate necessary security arrangements with agencies like the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Consequently, the proposed venue, Oduduwa Hall, could not be approved. OAU reaffirmed its respect for Obi and expressed willingness to host him in the future under proper arrangements, urging student organizations to adhere to established procedures for campus events.
