Carney Rejects Trump's Trade Demands, Accuses U.S. of Plot

On September 2, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney publicly rejected trade demands from the Trump administration, labeling them as unacceptable and accusing the U.S. of pursuing an economic strategy that could lead to the decline of key Canadian industries. Carney stated that Canada would not agree to a trade deal that undermines its industries, cultural protections, or sovereignty.

He specifically criticized U.S. proposals that could turn Canadian industries into subsidiaries of American companies and affect strategic sectors like the automobile industry. Carney emphasized that any of these issues would be sufficient to prevent Canada from accepting the proposed agreement.

Despite his firm stance, he expressed openness to resuming negotiations if the U.S. showed a genuine willingness to engage. Carney also condemned social media attacks from Trump and his administration, including Trump's suggestion to rename Lake Ontario and comments about making Canada the 51st state.

The tension escalated with a mocking social media post from U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth regarding the Canadian military, which Carney described as inappropriate.
