Healthcare Crisis: 1 Doctor for 10,000 Patients in Nigeria - WHO Alert

Nigeria faces a severe healthcare crisis as one doctor now serves approximately 10,000 patients due to a critical shortage of medical professionals. The World Health Organization recommends a much lower doctor-to-patient ratio for adequate primary healthcare coverage, but Nigeria falls significantly short of this standard.

The country, with an estimated population of 218 million, has a disproportionately low number of registered doctors, leading to overwhelming pressure on the healthcare system. The shortage of medical staff has resulted in the closure of wards in major hospitals like Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), denying hundreds of Nigerians critical care daily.

The situation underscores the urgent need for interventions to address the healthcare workforce deficit in Nigeria.
