Exodus of health workers, danger signal to nation’s healthcare system — Expert

The Managing Director of Ago Medical Centre in Okota, Lagos, Kola Afolabi, has raised concerns about the increasing exodus of Nigerian health workers, warning that if the trend continues unchecked, it could cripple the country's healthcare system within the next 15 years. Afolabi expressed his worries during the reopening of the hospital, which was rebuilt after a fire incident in February 2025.

He highlighted the challenges hospitals across the country are facing in recruiting doctors and nurses, emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention. The President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Bala Audu, revealed that there are currently few doctors practicing in the country, with many leaving for better opportunities abroad.

Afolabi urged the government to prioritize healthcare services by improving working conditions, providing modern facilities, and offering competitive salaries to retain healthcare professionals. The event was attended by several dignitaries who commended Afolabi for his commitment to providing quality medical care and expressed optimism that Nigeria's healthcare system would improve.
