Experts Call for Nutrition-Focused Food Trade in West Africa

During a regional webinar titled ‘How Food Trade and Markets Shape Diets in West Africa,’ experts discussed the need for food trade in West Africa to align with nutrition goals to provide healthier and more affordable diets. Joyce Akpata, head of policy, advocacy and communications at the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, urged governments to support evidence-based regulations, including clear nutrition labeling and responsible marketing, to ensure access to nutritious food without higher costs.

She highlighted the importance of public procurement as a strategic tool, noting that governments are significant buyers through schools, hospitals, and social protection programs. Victor Ajieroh, director of Praise Gate, emphasized the need for comprehensive nutrition strategies and the harmonization of nutrient-profile models across countries.

He stated that creating a regional nutrition economy is essential for expanding the market for healthy diets. Seun Sangoleye, CEO of Baby Grubz, pointed out that access to finance and infrastructure are major barriers for companies in the sector.
