Nigeria Resumes Onion Exports to Ghana Amid Trade Challenges

Nigeria's National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association (NOPPMAN) lifted its suspension of onion exports to Ghana in August following diplomatic intervention from Nigerian and Ghanaian officials. This decision came after complaints regarding harassment, truck seizures, and difficulties offloading at Accra's Kotoku Market.

Nigeria exports approximately 100,000 tonnes of onions to Ghana annually. However, the incident underscores broader issues in West African trade, where non-tariff barriers and inconsistent enforcement create uncertainty for traders.

Obiora Madu, an international trade expert, emphasized that true regional integration requires more than just tariff removal; it necessitates reliable border conditions. The ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme aims to eliminate customs duties and non-tariff barriers, yet traders often face delays and local restrictions.

Eric Alao, an entrepreneur and lecturer, pointed out that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has not effectively addressed these trade challenges. The onion dispute exemplifies the credibility issues surrounding regional integration efforts in West Africa.
