Western Naval Command Launches Operation Awkward

The Western Naval Command (WNC) officially launched Operation Awkward on October 25, 2023, to recalibrate strategies for defending Nigeria's maritime domain. The operation was flagged off by Rear Admiral Abdullahi Abubakar Mustapha aboard the Nigerian Navy ship NN Kada at Apapa, Lagos Harbour.

This defensive exercise is designed to assess the readiness of personnel and equipment in real-life scenarios. Vice Admiral Idi Abba, Chief of Naval Staff, emphasized the mission's goal to deploy highly motivated naval forces capable of safeguarding Nigeria's maritime interests.

The exercise will help identify gaps in readiness and improve tactical procedures. It is also intended to reinforce the security architecture of the increasingly complex maritime environment.

The operation will involve realistic drills along designated channels and will extend to various maritime assets. The exercise aims to ensure that all units understand their roles in safeguarding assets and maintaining operational superiority.
