Keyamo Calls for Wage Increase as Petrol Hits ₦1,400

The national minimum wage in Nigeria, set at ₦70,000, is facing scrutiny as petrol prices have surged to ₦1,400 per litre. This increase significantly diminishes workers' purchasing power, with a full allocation of the minimum wage to petrol allowing for only 50 litres.

The cost of 10 litres alone consumes 20% of the monthly wage, leaving ₦56,000 for essential expenses such as food, transportation, and healthcare. Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Keyamo, acknowledged that the current minimum wage is inadequate against rising living costs and called for improved wages during the 2026 National Pre-Retirement Summit.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by President Joe Ajaero, is advocating for wage negotiations that consider inflation and the cost of living, arguing that Nigeria should leverage higher global oil prices to provide relief to workers. Civil servants have also demanded a wage award and negotiations for a new minimum wage amid increasing economic pressures.
