WhatsApp Plans Payment Expansion, Potentially to Nigeria

WhatsApp is reportedly laying the groundwork for a broader rollout of its payments service, which may include Nigeria, as seen in the beta version 26.33.10.70 for iOS. This version features a dedicated Payments section, although it is not yet available to beta testers and lacks a confirmed launch date.

Currently, WhatsApp supports payments in select markets such as India, Brazil, Singapore, and Mexico, each utilizing different payment infrastructures. The new iOS development suggests a more integrated payments management system within the app, allowing users to send money directly to contacts and save credit and debit card information.

The billing-address selector reportedly includes countries like Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Ghana, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands, indicating a potential expansion of services. However, there is no official confirmation regarding Nigeria's inclusion.

This development follows the appointment of Kunal Shah as WhatsApp's new head, replacing Will Cathcart, who served for seven years. Shah's background in fintech may influence WhatsApp's payment capabilities.
