Anyakora Advocates for Healthcare Independence in Africa

During the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79) held from May 18 to May 23, 2026, in Geneva, Switzerland, Professor Chimezi Anyakora, Chief Executive Officer of Bloom Public Health, urged African governments to prioritize healthcare independence. He stressed the importance of increasing local investment in pharmaceutical manufacturing and developing sustainable financial strategies to enhance healthcare systems.

Anyakora highlighted that Africa can no longer depend heavily on foreign aid for healthcare solutions, especially amid growing global uncertainties and shrinking donor support. He called for immediate investments in local manufacturing of therapeutics, diagnostics, and vaccines to strengthen pandemic preparedness and reduce dependence on imports.

Anyakora also warned against misinformation surrounding vaccines, which undermines public health efforts. He noted that the private sector plays a critical role in ensuring sustainable healthcare systems across Africa.

The assembly attracted delegates from 194 member states, including health ministers and global health experts.
