Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal Defects to APC Amid Legal Issues

On Monday, October 30, 2023, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal announced his defection from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision was influenced by protracted legal disputes that have plagued the PDP, impacting its electoral prospects, particularly for the upcoming 2027 elections.

Lawal's spokesperson, Sulaiman Idri, stated that the move was a necessary step taken in the interest of Zamfara State after consultations with various political stakeholders. Despite his commitment to the PDP and efforts to reconcile internal factions, the inability to resolve the party's legal challenges led to this significant shift.

Lawal remains the last PDP governor seeking a second term, and his departure follows a court ruling that dismissed an appeal filed by the PDP against a previous judgment affecting the party's recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The governor's transition to APC is aimed at sustaining efforts to rebuild and rescue Zamfara State.
