Atiku Abubakar Defends Opposition to Obasanjo's Third Term

Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, explained his opposition to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third-term bid, emphasizing his commitment to Nigeria’s Constitution and democratic values. In a statement from his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku asserted that Obasanjo's recent comments were an attempt to distort history.

He expressed pride in having resisted the controversial third-term agenda, stating that it was not a personal conflict but a defense of Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. Atiku remarked, “I have no apology whatsoever for frustrating every attempt to subvert our democracy for personal ambition.” He also noted that the struggle was about preserving democracy for future generations, highlighting that the Nigerian people ultimately triumphed.

Furthermore, he criticized Obasanjo for judging those who defended the Constitution, contrasting this with the praise he received from Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala regarding his economic management team. Atiku concluded by recalling his support for Obasanjo during his imprisonment, underscoring the complexities of their relationship.
