Atiku Abubakar Proudly Defends Opposition to Obasanjo

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice-President of Nigeria, defended his opposition to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third-term agenda, asserting that he is proud of his role in preserving Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. This statement followed Obasanjo's remark that choosing Atiku as his running mate in the 1999 presidential election was his biggest mistake.

Atiku, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, rejected Obasanjo’s comments as an attempt to distort history. He emphasized that his actions were not about personal differences but about safeguarding democracy for future generations.

Atiku also highlighted his significant contributions to Obasanjo's political resurgence after his release from prison, stating that he supported Obasanjo's family and mobilized political structures for his emergence as President. Despite their strained relationship, Atiku expressed no regrets about his past assistance to Obasanjo, reinforcing that acts of kindness should not be contingent on expectations of reward.
