Governor Sani Advocates for Urgent State Police Bill

Governor Sani of Kaduna has expressed strong support for the accelerated state police bill, emphasizing its necessity due to Nigeria's critical shortage of security personnel. He stated that the establishment of state police is urgent, rather than a political choice, as delays in decentralizing police could lead to increased security risks and loss of lives.

Sani noted that Nigeria's military strength has dwindled to fewer than 250,000 personnel, while the police force is inadequate for the country's vast territory and growing population. He highlighted that previous attempts to advance this proposal have failed despite rising concerns over insecurity.

The proposed constitutional amendment seeks to create state police across Nigeria and requires approval from at least two-thirds of state houses of assembly. Sani also mentioned that the bill includes safeguards to prevent abuse of power by governors, ensuring that state police commissions cannot be unilaterally dismissed by governors.

He called for Nigerian support for this initiative to address the country's security challenges.
