Nigeria to Launch New Satellites by 2028 for Connectivity

Nigeria is set to launch two new communication satellites by 2028 to replace the existing NIGCOMSAT 1R, which has a lifespan that terminates in 2028. The NIGCOMSAT 1R was launched on December 19, 2011, and was designed for a 15-year operational lifespan, with a two-year extension allowing it to operate until 2028.

The federal government has approved the acquisition process for the new satellites, which will be launched in 2028 and 2029. Jane Egerton-Idehen, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT, expressed confidence in the government's commitment to advancing Nigeria's telecommunications infrastructure.

The new satellites aim to provide vital communication services across Nigeria and extend coverage to Sub-Saharan Africa, enhancing market reach in tier two and tier three markets. The approval for the new satellites comes as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its position in space technology and telecommunications.
