NIGCOMSAT to Renew Space Technology License by 2026

NIGCOMSAT is set to renew its space technology license, which is due to expire in December 2026. The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT, Jane Egerton-Idehen, disclosed the necessity of this renewal, highlighting the critical role NIGCOMSAT plays in providing satellite services that cover both geostationary and non-geostationary orbits.

In 2020, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) issued 55 permits to local and foreign players in the space technology sector, with updates on compliance with commercial satellite communication guidelines being biannual. The latest license issued by the NCC includes projects such as Amazon's Project Kuiper and Beetlesat 1 from Israel.

The NCC granted a global satellite internet operator a seven-year license to operate in Nigeria, valid from February 28, 2026, to February 28, 2033.
