SWAN Warns of Decline in Nigeria's Sports Sector

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has attributed the decline of Nigeria's sports sector to several factors, including the increasing dominance of foreign leagues, inadequate sports infrastructure, insufficient funding, and weak accountability. Mr. Moses Andishu, the National Patron of SWAN, expressed these concerns while delivering a keynote address at the association’s 2026 Triennial Delegates Congress in Kaduna, themed “Harnessing the Power of Sports and the Media for National Development, Youth Empowerment and Global Competitiveness.” He lamented the abandonment of Nigeria's indigenous sporting culture in favor of foreign leagues, which has weakened local competitions and hindered talent development.

Andishu urged sports journalists to enhance their accountability role and promote local competitions and athletes. He questioned the lack of quality sports infrastructure in Nigeria despite its large population and talent pool.

He also highlighted the media's critical role in reversing the decline and fostering youth empowerment through sports.
