Why Shatta Wale was arrested in Ghana

Popular Ghanaian music sensation Shatta Wale was arrested in Ghana on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in connection to a tax investigation linked to the purchase of a luxury vehicle. The artist's yellow Lamborghini was seized earlier in the month at the request of US authorities, who alleged the car was tied to proceeds of a criminal enterprise involving another Ghanaian, Nana Kwabena Amuah, currently serving a prison sentence in the US for fraud.

Shatta Wale's management stated that his detention was strictly related to tax obligations and denied any involvement in criminal activities. The Economic Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Ghana confirmed that Shatta Wale, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah, was interrogated in connection to the ongoing investigation involving the Lamborghini and its ties to criminal proceeds.

The case remains open as authorities continue to investigate.
