Nigerian Lawmakers Reject Governor Umahi's Rice Donation Over Stringent Conditions

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives rejected a donation of rice from Governor Umahi, sourced from the Ministry of Works. The rejection stemmed from the stringent conditions attached to the distribution process, which lawmakers found undignified and cumbersome.

The legislators were required to follow a complex procedure outlined in an internal memo, including obtaining special forms from the Speaker's office and submitting various documents to collect the rice at Garki International Market near the old Central Bank of Nigeria quarter. Lawmakers questioned the rationale behind collecting the rice from a public market instead of within the National Assembly complex, considering the vulnerability of the people in Ebonyi State.

The collection process began on January 26, with each lawmaker entitled to 125 kg of rice.
