Wike expands Abuja renewal push with Life Camp park makeover

Nyesom Wike, who heads the Federal Capital Territory ministry, unveiled intentions to convert the long-abandoned Life Camp recreation park into a state-of-the-art sports and leisure hub. This announcement came several weeks following completion of an extensive renovation at Abuja's City Gate, now ranking among the capital's most visited public destinations.

During a Monday inspection of the site, Wike revealed the Life Camp initiative while signalling an expansion of the broader urban renewal agenda across the FCT Administration. Shifting beyond traditional infrastructure such as roads and public buildings, the Life Camp project reflects evolving priorities within the administration's development approach.

Reports indicate the reborn facility would deliver Abuja residents with superior recreational amenities distributed across various neighbourhoods. Since reopening during commemorative events marking President Bola Tinubu's third year in office, the City Gate has enjoyed substantial visitor engagement.

During a Monday ceremony at the Presidential Villa, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu voiced strong backing for Wike's endeavours. The FCT Administration received commendation for environmental work at the event.

Tinubu characterised the City Gate's conversion as remarkable and noted alignment with the Renewed Hope Initiative's Green Nigeria Challenge—an effort meant to inspire youth in transforming neglected spaces into verdant recreational zones. She lamented that state governments had failed to participate in the N50 million prize tier of this challenge, reflecting weak engagement from subnational bodies.

Situated adjacent to the minister's residence, the Life Camp park has sat dormant throughout several decades. Available information contains no specifics regarding project timelines or financial allocations.
