China’s Zero-Tariff Policy: A Game Changer for Nigeria

China has launched a zero-tariff regime for 53 African countries, including Nigeria, with implementation set for May 1, 2026. This initiative, announced by President Xi Jinping in February, is viewed as a pivotal moment for China-Africa relations and aims to accelerate Africa's economic transformation.

The discussions at an international seminar in Abuja emphasized that while China can open its market, Nigeria must develop the productive capacity to supply it. Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, described the policy as a significant milestone.

The Director of the Centre for China Studies, Charles Onunaiju, noted that this preferential trade policy has evolved since 2003, expanding to cover 100% of tariff lines for least developed countries with diplomatic relations with China. The early trade figures indicate a historic high in China-Africa trade in the first half of 2026, with significant increases in China's imports from Africa following the new regime.
