2027 Nigerian Presidential Election: Key Contenders Emerge

With 371 days remaining until the presidential election scheduled for February 20, 2027, the political landscape in Nigeria is taking shape. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the election date, which falls during the Muslim fasting period of Ramadan.

Key contenders include former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who has previously run unsuccessfully in six elections from 1993 to 2023, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, who garnered 6,101,533 votes in the 2023 election. Rotimi Amaechi, a former Minister of Transport and two-term Governor of Rivers State, has also declared his intent to run.

Other notable figures include Dr. Gbenga Olawepo Hashim from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Emeka Nwajiuba from the ADC.

Hamza Al Mustapha, a retired chief security officer, has also announced his candidacy under the Social Democratic Party (SDP). The political dynamics are influenced by various factions within the parties as they prepare for primaries to determine their flagbearers.
