EU Envoy Highlights Women's Role in Nigeria's Green Economy

On Tuesday night in Abuja, Gautier Mignot, the European Union ambassador to Nigeria, underscored the vital role of women in building Nigeria's green economy. He urged for increased investment and inclusivity to enable women to contribute significantly to climate action and sustainable growth.

Mignot noted that Nigeria possesses substantial untapped potential, particularly among women, who already play a major role in the economy despite facing systemic barriers. He highlighted that women represent 70% of Nigeria's informal economy and 50-70% of smallholder agricultural labor.

However, they remain underrepresented in access to finance and decision-making spaces that shape the green economy. Mignot questioned whether stakeholders are doing enough to support women's roles and called for an inclusive financial framework.

Amanda Archibong Doukour, who convened the dialogue, pointed out that women-led businesses are crucial for grassroots climate action but are largely excluded from formal financing systems. The discussion comes amid growing calls for inclusive climate action and pathways to a low-carbon economy in Nigeria.
