Women's Economic Empowerment Policy Progress in Nigeria

At the 26th Regular National Council on Women Affairs and Child Development in Jalingo, Taraba State, Mrs. Rinmicit Temlong-Aboki, Gender Lead at DGA–Albright Stonebridge Group, presented a mid-point review of the Women's Economic Empowerment Policy. This policy aims to enhance women's economic participation and tackle barriers hindering their contributions to national development.

Temlong-Aboki noted that women represent approximately 70% of Nigeria's agricultural workforce and food production, yet financial exclusion restricts their ability to invest and grow businesses. More than 20 states have started domesticating the policy, with Kaduna implementing it in October 2024, Lagos unveiling its Policy Roadmap in July 2025, and Kano launching its policy in March 2026.

Additionally, there was a reported 96% increase in the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs budget between 2025 and 2026, alongside commitments from state governments. Effective implementation of the policy requires stronger state ownership, sustained financing, institutional coordination, and increased private-sector participation.
