Women's Group Advocates for Political Inclusion in Nigeria

A women's group in Nigeria, represented by Nkoyo Toyo, is intensifying its advocacy for affirmative action and reserved seats to improve women's political representation. During a recent engagement, Toyo highlighted the ongoing struggle for gender equity in leadership over the past three decades.

She noted that despite efforts, the outcomes of constitutional reforms have not met expectations, with women holding less than four percent of seats in the national assembly. Toyo emphasized the need for political leaders to support ongoing advocacy for special legislative seats for women.

Dudu Manuga from the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) reaffirmed the party's commitment to expanding opportunities for women in leadership roles. Seriake Dickson acknowledged the low levels of female representation in Nigeria as a serious challenge and called for the creation of more opportunities for capable women in politics.

The NDC aims to dismantle barriers that discourage women's participation in elections and promote their empowerment.
