Anambra Workers Face Salary Cuts, Strike Action Looms

A looming workers' strike in Anambra State is being driven by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) due to arbitrary salary deductions imposed by the government without explanation. Civil servants in Anambra have reported monthly salary deductions ranging from N25,000 to N48,000.

This situation has caused significant frustration among workers, especially as many receive as little as N22,000 monthly, which is insufficient to cover basic living expenses amid rising inflation and transport costs. Governor Chukwuma Soludo's earlier threats to suspend workers without pay for six months have exacerbated tensions.

Workers have expressed their dissatisfaction, stating that despite strict attendance monitoring, their salaries continue to be reduced without clear justification. Labour leaders have indicated that they will not remain silent and are preparing for a meeting to discuss further actions.

The situation reflects a broader struggle against worsening economic conditions in Nigeria.
