NLC Warns Workers Will Vote Out Anti-Labor Governors in 2027

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a warning that workers will vote out governors perceived as anti-labor in the upcoming 2027 general elections. NLC General Secretary Benson Upah stated that workers across Nigeria are becoming increasingly aware of their electoral strength and will no longer support leaders who fail to prioritize their welfare.

Upah criticized governors for undermining worker welfare through delayed salaries, unpaid pensions, mass retrenchments, and failure to implement labor agreements. He indicated that non-worker-friendly governors would face consequences at the polls, as workers will vote for those who promise to maintain friendly relations with labor.

This warning comes amid rising frustrations among civil servants due to delayed implementation of the new national minimum wage and outstanding wage awards. The NLC's position signals a potential shift towards a more organized labor movement aimed at translating their electoral strength into political influence, particularly among public sector workers, as economic hardships continue to escalate.
