Kebbi Launches World Bank Erosion Control Projects

The Commissioner for Environment, Musa Tungulawa, announced the initiation of World Bank-backed erosion control projects in Kebbi during a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi. These projects are set to directly and indirectly benefit more than 50,000 people in affected communities and surrounding areas.

The initiatives consist of two erosion control and bio-engineering sites in Badariya under Lot 1 and two additional sites in Dukku Malala under Lot 2. The state Ministry of Environment is implementing these projects in collaboration with the Kebbi ACRESAL Project, with support from the World Bank.

The interventions aim to enhance climate resilience, control flooding and erosion, reclaim degraded land, and promote sustainable livelihoods. Tungulawa emphasized that the projects would address the expansion of gullies, flooding, and soil degradation impacting homes, farmlands, roads, and businesses.

The projects are scheduled for completion within 15 months, with a directive for the contractor to mobilize adequate resources to expedite the work due to the urgent environmental challenges.
