Ime Okon, a current member of the South African national football team, Bafana Bafana, revealed his decision to represent South Africa instead of Nigeria. He stated that there were no serious attempts from Nigeria to persuade him to change his international allegiance.

Okon played the full 90 minutes in a recent match where South Africa drew 1-1 against the Czech Republic. He expressed a strong emotional connection to South Africa, emphasizing that he always preferred to play for the South African team.

This decision comes at a time when Nigeria, the three-time African champions, failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a significant disappointment as it would be the second consecutive tournament they miss. The Super Eagles have struggled to qualify for recent tournaments, extending an undesirable streak since their World Cup debut in 1994.
