Im Okon Chooses South Africa Over Nigeria for Football

Im Okon, a 21-year-old footballer, has chosen to represent South Africa's national team, Bafana Bafana, instead of Nigeria, despite being born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother. In an interview with Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Okon explained that his decision was driven by a strong connection to South Africa, stating, "I don’t know how to say it, but at the end of the day, I know in my heart I want to play for South Africa." He played a full 90 minutes in South Africa's 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Okon also dismissed suggestions that Nigeria made serious attempts to persuade him to switch his international allegiance, stating there was no serious effort from Nigeria to convince him to represent the Super Eagles. He expressed loyalty to South Africa, where he feels at home.
