AYGF Highlights Malaria Progress, Urges Action on Shortages

On World Malaria Day 2026, the Africa Youth Growth Foundation (AYGF) showcased a breakthrough in malaria elimination efforts in Edo State, Nigeria. Dr.

Arom Salifu, the Executive Director of AYGF, emphasized Nigeria's heavy malaria burden, accounting for a quarter of global cases and nearly a third of malaria-related deaths. AYGF's partnership with government and development partners has led to significant improvements in healthcare delivery, with nearly 300 health workers trained and 190 community mobilizers equipped for diagnosis and treatment.

The project, operational across 18 local government areas within a year, has increased rapid malaria testing to 64% and treatment cases by 42%. Additionally, maternal health has improved, with malaria treatment for pregnant women doubling, protecting 14,000 mothers and newborns.

Despite these gains, Dr. Salifu raised concerns about persistent shortages of key commodities, including insecticide-treated nets and pediatric malaria drugs, warning that supply gaps threaten lives.

He called for intensified efforts from government and partners to sustain malaria prevention and treatment initiatives.
