NUJ Advocates for Press Freedom on World Press Freedom Day

On World Press Freedom Day, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) issued a statement reaffirming the importance of free and independent press in promoting democracy and human rights. The statement, released on Sunday, highlighted the critical role of journalism in fostering peace and strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria.

The NUJ noted a cautious optimism regarding improved relations between the media and the Department of State Services (DSS), citing a decline in cases of intimidation and arbitrary arrests of journalists. They commended the leadership of the DSS, particularly its Director General, for encouraging constructive engagement with the media.

However, the NUJ stressed the need to sustain and deepen this progress through continued dialogue and adherence to the rule of law. They reiterated that press freedom is a constitutional right and urged the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to emulate the DSS in respecting journalists' rights, creating an enabling environment for media practice without fear of intimidation.
