Yoruba Lawyers Demand NBA Election Postponement for Reforms

Members of the Yoruba Lawyer Forum, Egb Amofin Oodua, led by Chief Isiaka Olagunju SAN, have called for the postponement of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) elections scheduled for Saturday. They demand a minimum extension of seven days to implement necessary electoral reforms, specifically advocating for the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) linked to phone numbers for voter verification.

Olagunju criticized the NBA leadership for abandoning previously agreed reforms and expressed disappointment over the decision to proceed with elections without these changes. He noted that the current email-based authentication system is vulnerable to manipulation.

The call for postponement follows an emergency National Executive Council meeting where 176 members voted to proceed with the elections, a decision Olagunju claims does not reflect the majority's wishes. He warned that conducting elections without implementing agreed reforms could further erode confidence in the NBA's electoral system.
