NBA Confirms Election Schedule Amid AGF Controversy

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has confirmed that its national officers' election is set to occur from July 20 to July 18, 2026, with results announced on July 19, 2026. This announcement comes amid controversy involving the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi SAN, who sought to halt the election process.

The NBA, led by President Afam Osigwe SAN, rejected the AGF's attempts as interference in its internal affairs, asserting its constitutional authority to conduct elections. Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, accused the AGF of trying to control the NBA ahead of the elections.

The NBA criticized a document purportedly linked to the AGF, claiming it lacked authenticity and was not issued on official letterhead. The association emphasized its independence and the legality of its electoral process, stating that it would not be subject to external control.

The NBA also highlighted concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process and the potential risks posed by the AGF's involvement.
