Lawan Urges South Africa to Protect Nigerians Amid Violence

Ahmad Lawan, the former Senate President of Nigeria, met with the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria to address the ongoing violence against Nigerians living in South Africa. During a plenary session on Tuesday, Lawan recounted the Nigerian leadership's response during the peak of xenophobic violence, highlighting that direct engagement with South African representatives was necessary.

He expressed that the killing of Nigerians has gone too far, especially while South African businesses continue to operate in Nigeria without issues. Lawan articulated Nigeria's dissatisfaction with the treatment of its citizens in South Africa, despite the strong trade relations between the two countries.

He called on South African authorities to ensure the protection of foreign nationals and prevent further attacks, stressing that such incidents strain relations between the countries and affect the idea of unity within Africa. Lawan emphasized the importance of mutual respect and safety for people living across different borders in Africa.
