Nigeria Mandates Tax Identification Numbers for Bank Accounts from 2026

The Federal Government of Nigeria has mandated that every taxable Nigerian must possess a Tax Identification Number (TIN) to operate a bank account from January 1, 2026. This update is in line with the Nigerian Tax Administration Act (NTAA) and aims to ensure compliance with tax regulations.

Individuals earning income are not exempt, while existing TIN holders do not need to reapply. Failure to comply may lead to challenges with bank accounts.

President Bola Tinubu signed the new tax law in June 2025 for implementation in 2026.
