National Assembly Nears Conclusion on Electoral Act Amendment

Senator Orji Kalu confirmed during a television interview on Tuesday that the National Assembly's committee is close to finalizing the amendment of the Electoral Act, with updates anticipated shortly. He explained that lawmakers have suspended other legislative duties to focus entirely on the Electoral Act process.

The harmonization committee has begun reconciling the differing versions of the bill from the Senate and House of Representatives, taking into account feedback from Nigerian citizens. The committee's work has been intensive, with members spending several hours deliberating the bill.

The Senate has set up a 12-member committee to align positions on the amendment. This latest move follows significant debate regarding the transmission of election results, with the Senate approving electronic transmission while the House retained provisions for real-time uploads.

Kalu emphasized that the outcome of this harmonization process will significantly impact the credibility of future elections and public confidence in the electoral system.
