Zamfara Governor Orders Resignation of Political Appointees

On March 9, 2026, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal issued a directive requiring all political appointees who plan to run for office in the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions by March 31, 2026. This announcement was made during the 64th executive council meeting held at the government house in Gusau.

The directive, communicated through the governor's spokesperson Sulaiman Idri, is in accordance with the recent amendments to the Electoral Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu. Governor Lawal emphasized the importance of this move in light of the upcoming elections.

Additionally, he instructed the state government’s secretariat to issue a circular to all political appointees regarding this requirement. The directive comes amid a backdrop of political shifts, including the recent defection of Deputy Governor Mani Mummuni from the People's Democratic Party to the Progress Congress, citing internal crises within the PDP that could jeopardize preparations for the 2027 polls.
