Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal May Join APC After Eid

Dauda Lawal, the Governor of Zamfara State, is reportedly contemplating a defection from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the Eid-el-Kabir celebration. This speculation arises as APC leaders in Abuja are allegedly making efforts to persuade Lawal to join their party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reports suggest that APC leaders have offered Lawal an automatic governorship ticket for the 2027 elections, with a proposed arrangement that 40 percent of political appointments in the state would be reserved for him, while the remaining 60 percent would be shared among APC stakeholders. Sources within the APC, speaking anonymously, expect Lawal to officially join the party soon.

This potential move comes amid a leadership crisis within the PDP, exacerbated by a controversial national convention held in November 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State, which was later declared illegal by a high court. The outcome of an appeal court judgment regarding this convention will significantly influence Lawal's political future and whether he remains with the PDP.
