Quintuplets in Kano: One Dies, Four in Intensive Care

A tragic development occurred at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano State, where one of the quintuplets born prematurely has died. The remaining four infants are currently receiving intensive medical care.

According to a statement from the Kano State Hospital Management Board, the quintuplets were admitted to the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) due to low birth weight complications. The newborns were placed under intensive care, receiving support such as incubator care, intravenous fluids, and antibiotic therapy.

The first infant, a female weighing 1.3 kilograms, received a blood transfusion due to complications related to apnoea. The other surviving infants include three males weighing between 1.2 and 1.3 kilograms, and another female weighing 1.0 kilogram.

They are being closely monitored for hypoglycaemia and are undergoing phototherapy for neonatal jaundice. The board emphasized the complexity and risks associated with premature multiple births and commended the healthcare workers for their dedication.
