WHO Reports 1,153 Mpox Cases Across 11 African Nations

The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that between 6 July and 16 August 2026, 11 African countries experienced active transmission of mpox, recording 1,153 confirmed cases and seven deaths. The report, published on 14 September, indicated that Madagascar had the highest number of cases at 785, followed by Angola with 184 cases, Kenya with 94, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) with 41, and Cameroon with 28.

The WHO noted that the weekly confirmed cases have remained stable at approximately 200 per week, although it cautioned that these figures might be underestimated due to reporting delays and reduced surveillance. This outbreak is part of a larger multi-country mpox situation affecting 35 African countries since January 2025, with a total of 52,424 confirmed cases and 238 deaths reported between 1 January 2025 and 16 August 2026.

Globally, there were 65,784 confirmed cases and 264 deaths across 105 countries during the same period.
