WHO Reports Worsening Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has now expanded to 63 health zones across seven of the country's 26 provinces, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) on September 25. The expansion follows the identification of infections in two new health zones: Bulu in Sud Ubangi province and Dungu in Haut-Uélé province, which borders South Sudan.

As of the latest update, there have been 7,890 confirmed cases and 3,799 deaths, resulting in a crude case fatality ratio of 48.1 percent. The WHO indicated that the geographic expansion heightens the risk of cross-border transmission, particularly near international borders.

Daily new cases remain high nationally, although transmission levels vary by province and health zone. The ongoing high case fatality ratio and persistent community deaths highlight the outbreak's severity and the challenges in early case detection.

Delays in diagnosis and treatment access are contributing to preventable deaths and ongoing transmission within communities and healthcare facilities.
