Nigerian Professors Earn 13 Times Less Than South African Counterparts, Study Reveals

A recent study revealed that Nigerian professors earn 13 times less than their South African counterparts, with an average monthly salary of $366 compared to $4,800 in South Africa. This disparity extends to other African countries like Uganda, Kenya, and Ghana.

The low pay is attributed to poor funding, inflation, and dwindling research funds in Nigerian universities, leading to demoralization among academic staff. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that the situation could threaten the survival of Nigerian universities.

Former vice-chancellor Wandé Abimbola and ASUU chairman Awai Olujimi Dada have criticized the neglect of the academic sector by the government.
