Diphtheria Outbreak in Jos North Claims 15 Lives

An alarming outbreak of Diphtheria in Jos North has led to the deaths of 15 individuals, with 117 suspected cases reported, according to Baks Bulus, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO). The fatalities occurred within three days of the outbreak, following the deaths of two children from a family in Jos.

Bulus explained that Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that spreads through close contact, particularly among individuals sharing utensils and personal items. He emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating that fully vaccinated children experience milder effects.

To combat the outbreak, Bulus advised residents to practice good personal hygiene, avoid overcrowded areas, and seek immediate medical attention at primary healthcare centers instead of resorting to self-medication. Personnel from the Local Government Council (LGC) have been deployed to raise awareness about the disease's impact in affected areas.
