Surgeon Advocates for Celebration of Kidney Donors

Dr. Torngee Malu, a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, called for the celebration of kidney donors and the doctors involved in transplant procedures instead of victimization. His remarks came during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, in response to the Nigeria Police Force's arrest of two doctors and other suspects linked to an alleged organ-harvesting syndicate in Nasarawa State.

Malu emphasized the importance of encouraging voluntary organ donations within a regulated system, highlighting that 50 people die daily from kidney disease in Nigeria. He pointed out that the Nigerian Health Care Act of 2014 permits organ donation under specific conditions, including informed consent from adults.

Malu stated that the individuals involved in the current investigation were adults who had consented to the procedures, thus underscoring the need for a proper legal framework to support organ donation and to counter negative public perceptions fueled by social media.
