Nasarawa Floods Claim Two Lives, Displace Many Residents
Flooding in Nasarawa has resulted in the deaths of two individuals and has ravaged 18 communities, displacing numerous residents and destroying buildings and farmlands. Dr. Nawani Aboki, the State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, disclosed these details during a press briefing in Lafia, the state capital.
Following the incident, Governor Abdullahi Sule instructed the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to visit the affected areas. SEMA is currently preparing a report for the government to facilitate further action.
Aboki confirmed that many Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are seeking refuge in higher ground communities, with over eight communities camped in Agwama and four to five in Loko. He urged residents in lowland areas to relocate to highlands and to heed advisories from SEMA, NEMA, and NIMET.
Aboki advised displaced persons to refrain from returning to their homes until the floodwaters recede completely, as additional water may be released from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. The government is committed to preventing disease outbreaks in the affected regions.
