Kano Rainstorms Cause 9 Deaths and Displace 4,524 People

Between January and August 2026, rainstorms in Kano State resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals and displaced over 4,500 others, as confirmed by Isyaku Kubarachi, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency. During this period, 49 people sustained injuries of varying degrees.

The affected local government areas include Gaya, Ajingi, Rimin Gado, Minjibir, Kabo, Bichi, Shanono, and Kibiya. The agency recorded six major incidents, with windstorms and rainstorms causing the highest number of casualties and displacements.

Minjibir had 712 victims, Bichi 775, Shanono 530, Kibiya 630, Ajingi 415, Gaya 342, Rimin Gado 233, and Kabo 102. Kubarachi stated that the agency has completed field assessments and submitted reports to the Kano State Government to facilitate intervention.

This report follows a motion moved by Lawan Shehu during a plenary session on July 29, 2026, urging the state government to provide urgent relief to affected communities.
