Nigeria Shines at 2026 African Weightlifting Championships

At the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships held in Ismailia, Egypt, Team Nigeria achieved remarkable success, amassing a total of 10 gold and five silver medals. The Nigerian athletes showcased their prowess, with notable performances including Ruth Nyong Asuquo, who dominated the women's 48kg division by winning three gold medals with a combined total lift of 167kg.

Omolola Didih also excel in the women's 53kg category, securing three gold medals with a total of 192kg. Rafiat Afolashad Lawal continued Nigeria's dominance in the women's 58kg division, winning three gold medals.

In the men's category, Omovigho Agboro earned one gold and two silver medals in the men's 65kg event. Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, commended the athletes and the leadership of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, led by Dr.

Ibrahim Abdul, for their commitment to developing elite athletes. The NSC emphasized the need for athletes to remain focused as they prepare for future competitions, including the Commonwealth Games.
